FIRST / The FIRST Project

http://first-asd.eu/

The FIRST Project was a €2.5million FP7 EC funded project which ran between 2011 and 2014, the University of Wolverhampton coordinated this project which was formed by a consortium of nine academic and non-academic institutions. Research carried out by the Research Group in Computational Linguistics (RGCL), University of Wolverhampton, as part of this project led to the development of software which enables users (people with ASD and intermediaries) to convert a standard document into a personalised version which is more accessible for people with autism.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are developmental disorders which affect qualitative impairment in communication and have stereotyped repetitive behaviour. These communication issues are often in the comprehension of speech and writing, including misinterpretation of meanings and difficulty understanding complex instructions or sentences. Figures of speech, uncommon language and technical words also create obstacles to complete understanding of texts for people with ASD. In Bulgaria there is currently no protocol for early ASD detection and there are no special schools for children with ASD and school services for SEN children and still being developed.

There is a lack of an accurate statistics on the number of people with autism in Bulgaria. About 140,000 children in the country have autism. This number is derived from world statistics and the number of children in Bulgaria. Information is from https://www.autismtoday-bg.eu/post/deca-s-autizam

The FIRST project uses innovative language technology (LT) to make documents more accessible to people with ASD. Open Book, the text conversion software developed by the project, is able to automatically detect a set of linguistic barriers to reading comprehension and remove some of them to make texts more accessible for autistic individuals (e.g. replace ambiguous words and expressions with clear versions, break complex sentences into sequences of simpler sentences). It also aims to simplify complex structure in text and clarify ambiguity. Not relying purely on textual changes, the conversion software adds illustrative pictures to documents and provides concise document summaries.

Using the system developed in the FIRST project, users with ASD will be empowered to read documents with confidence and at their own convenience, without relying on support workers. This will enable users with ASD to gain better access to educational, vocational, cultural and social opportunities in Europe. During the three years of the project, clinicians in three different EU countries worked closely with people with ASD and their carers to define the requirements for the system and collect feedback at each stage of development in order to ensure that it proceeds in accordance with their requirements. One exciting aspect of the project is that the simplifying language technology which is currently being developed will have wide‐ranging applications beyond that of users with ASD. Modified versions of the software could be of benefit to other types of health service user, as well as groups in other sectors (e.g. language learners, migrants, readers of legal documentation).

Interview Transcripts/Feedback

The below are some excerpts from interviews undertaken with parents/carers of the children who were in the test group.

  • “I think this programme is very suitable for children with autism”
  • “It has been created quite easy of access and the things follow naturally, I mean, it’s simple to work with. Even people who haven’t got good computer skills and knowledge can use it on their own, without any need of assistance. It has got enough explanations; the buttons are very large and people can find them easily. It’s just the beginning, but I think it’s very important because one can easily find what they look for in a programme, site or whatever.”
  • “It will make them more self-dependent, more independent from us, or at least we will be a kind of side-watchers, helpers but not the people who stand by their side all the time. “
  • “As far as school is concerned, I’d really like to have the eBooks which together with this software will help children a lot.”
  • “Using the programme will be like education, not just having fun; being able to look for different information.”
  • “The Open Book program is a useful tool for simplifying texts. What I like about it is that there are two options – for separate use for people with autism and for specialists”
  • “ The mother of the child said that he was very happy and exited after we worked with the program. He wanted to try it by himself.”
  • “The child had an interest in working with the program for his geography lesson. He was attracted by the fact that he can see different images and objects and put them in the text. Compared to reading the lesson from a textbook, reading through the program enabled him to keep his attention on the lesson for longer.”
  • “I believe that it will be very useful for teachers in the mainstream schools. With the help of the program the teachers can adapt the lessons for children with autism as well as for children that are on a different level or have language issues”
  • “Еasy navigation of the program, fast access to the meaning of the words, and ways to adapt them.”
  • “The child is more motivated. When using the program the child agrees to study longer - reading, asking and answering questions.”
  • “My experience with the OPEN BOOK program is very good. My son and I have been using the program for a long time. My son is very pleased with the program.”
  • “His communication has improved. He was shy before but now he is starting to overcome that.I can see that he starts to communicate with other children. He goes to them and starts talking, and he never did that before.”
  • “yesterday was the biggest success, because he showed independence with his behavior”
  • “Words they don’t understand are shown to them what they mean. It enriches their dictionary. These children have a very poor dictionary.”
  • “The program is good. It is positive that it is a technology which will get into our everyday lives. It is interesting for the children because it sharpens their senses. It is not a standard teaching method. The children are in front of the computer so the eyes and ears are involved. The child is not writing in a text book but on a computer. That is very positive.”
  • “I am very happy that something like this is in progress and that people are finally thinking of a way to help these children”
  • “He can learn his lesson by himself even if I am not there. That’s a way for him to find the answer alone without my help.”

Parallel World Feedback

We participated in the user focused evaluation, this included interviews with the users focusing on their opinions of the software and undertaking reading comprehension tests to evaluate the impact the tool had on children with autism and their carers. Overall it demonstrated a positive effect on these children, further information and statistics are available on the project website (add link).

A summary of our feedback showed the main positives were:

Parallel World’s participation in the FIRST project enabled us to grow, from a small organisation providing support to 7 members before the project began, to 17 members by the end of the project, and to around 80 members today.

The increase in our knowhow, capability, and reputation that followed from this paved the way for subsequent successes. We now run a social enterprise which employs young people with disabilities, currently employs eight full-time employees and eight trainees, and we have participated as a lead partner in numerous additional research projects, both nationally and across Europe.

Prior to the user requirements analysis and evaluation processes conducted in the FIRST project, charities in Bulgaria had little knowledge of the kinds of barriers that people with ASD face when reading and the strategies which may be used to overcome these barriers. FIRST thus helped to bridge a gap in knowledge about ASD in Bulgaria. With this knowledge, for the first time, charities in Bulgaria serving children with ASD were able to provide reading comprehension support for their service users. After the initial push provided by dissemination of project research findings, other charities in Bulgaria continued to work in this direction (e.g. the ASSIST foundation, https://bit.ly/36vWCp4 and the Elia foundation, https://bit.ly/35hHKLk). The parents of children and adolescents with ASD who are supported by organisations like these are now being equipped with strategies to support their children’s reading.
